The EUROfiasco 2021 Top 10

QUICK LINKS: Vimeo | YouTube | Spotify | Apple Music

Blimey, where did the time go between that last post and here? (Answer: in lockdown).

Well, ok that's the glib answer. Actually we had a lovely summer! and then another lockdown or two. But here we are, just a week away from finally having another Eurovision winner. Duncan Laurence officially is the longest-reigning champ ever and fingers crossed that's a record he gets to keep forever, frankly.

Despite the optimistic noises we made at the end of the last blog entry, we aren't in Rotterdam - but we are just grateful to be able to report that there is a Eurovision happening at all. Not that we ever did, but we will never take this wonderful and mad contest of ours for granted again. Being able to have a proper competition, live shows, voting and all that makes up Eurovision World - it is wonderful to have it back!

One thing we did have last year were songs of course, which meant we still had a EUROfiasco Top 10, even if we'll never know how our runners and riders would have gone in the real thing. We're delighted to be able to present to you this year's top 10!

Our Top 10. Outsiders are (in ascending order):
Estonia, Australia & Norway.
After last year's slight struggle to find them, this year really is BOP CENTRAL. With one or two exceptions, the BPMs are ramped up, the energy is flowing, and Eurovision is ready for the dancefloor (and my god we can't wait for a bumper time at the next Eurofest or other Euro disco whenever that might be).

I think it's fair to say that we have done our bit to ensure those bops are well represented in our top 10.

Since we did our voting back at the end of March, things have ebbed and flowed as usual as to the songs that we hear and start to like more - and I'm sure if we did this voting again tonight it would look slightly different. But as ever we have full confidence and love for our list - and another douze points banger to add to the long list of faves.

As pixel goes to screen, we've not long unveiled the Top 10 at this year's Flag-Waving - a final online event before Monday's scheduled Step 3, when we can start to see people indoors again. We'll be making the most of that for Festival EUROfiasco 2021 - and look forward to reporting back on how it all goes in a week's time (or, more likely, once we've emotionally/mentally/physically recovered as per).

At the Flag-Waving, as is of course traditional we previewed the songs via our Top 10 and an old-fashioned recap of the full lot (although a good amount of prep had been done by many of our guests!). And is also now traditional, our Dance Captain skilfully taught us the moves to this year's EUROfiasco Dance Academy - which is to Embers, the UK entry! We hope we did him proud with our collective ability to, eventually, pick up the moves.

Dance Academy in action

The assembled also chose their favourite songs - whether based on their extensive prior research, or what they heard for the first time in the Flag-Waving. So we had a top 5 that looks like this:
  1. Croatia
  2. Cyprus
  3. Ireland
  4. Sweden
  5. Lithuania
Well done Croatia! Could Albina be tick-tocking her way to victory based on this feedback? We shall soon see... and of course we wish Cyprus particularly well in their efforts to finally bring Eurovision to a warm Mediterranean island. (What's that Malta? No, sorry, we didn't put Destiny in our Top 10. Yes we know it's a favourite. And yes we will be on the first flight to Valetta next May if you win!)

So - grab your devices and watch/listen to our Outsiders and Top 10 - plus of course the UK (good luck James!) via the links above or the embeds below (the Vimeo embed was being funky  but you can just jump straight there via this link).

Good luck everybody!
