Scandi Super Saturday number 1

Last night the Eurovision selection season landed back in our lives with quite a bang (or, more appropriately, a boom). Yes, Melodifestivalen was back - and it was also the one-stop-shop final of Danish Melodi Grand Prix. I don't quite understand the logic of the Scandis all competing with each other in prime-time Saturday TV this way - even more egregious is Norway's clashing of their final with the Melfest final on 14 March. Doesn't everyone want to watch each others? And, more to the point - we do!

In the end Team Fiasco managed the situation as best we could, watching the MGP from Aalborg live and then going straight to SVT Play for the first heat from Gothenburg.

Denmark came close to sending something pretty good, and indeed the televoters put a decent song top, but the juries had already spoken and were determined to send the rather 'meh' Anti Social Media through to Vienna. I mean, it's ok... pleasant enough... but it doesn't set the world on fire. So instead we bring you that second-placed song:

Besides that we also enjoyed Mi Amore - although I think even we would balk at the idea of sending an almost-identical retread of our own entry from 5 years ago. And there was the shambolic-but-enjoyable mess of World of Girls (and we love a dramatic pause as much as the next pair of gays, but really... it's like the whole thing came in at 2'40" and they needed to pad it out).

It's fair to say we are looking forward to the CD arriving next week with the studio version of that one.

This was also ok, and this was camp nonsense... all in all, it wasn't a bad run of 10 songs, although nothing really and truly took our breath away.

Meanwhile over in Sweden, it was always going to be about the Return of Eric. Now we would rarely contenance a return to Eurovision - it didn't work for Charlotte or Dana, didn't quite work for Jedward - although Carola gave it a pretty good go at breaking the curse. Anyway, the problem is that normally the comeback song isn't as good as the iconic first one. And Eric did pretty bloody well first time around to come 3rd from a terrible place in the draw.

So, yeah, Sting isn't as good as Popular or Manboy, but how could it ever be? It's still good though - and Eric performs, as ever, with all the gusto that he puts into everything. And he still looks good. So we're happy with that. One heat in, it's our favourite - it'll be interesting tis ee what Mans pulls out of the bag in 4 weeks time.
(We also remember being a bit unimpressed by Popular on a first listen, hungover, the day-after-the-night-we-sat-in-the-same-room-as-Kylie. And look how that turned out).

Obviously we can't embed it or link to it as SVT are still policing the uploading of songs that qualify - so you'll just have to trust us for now. However thanks to their change of policy on songs going to Andra Chansen, we can give you the delights of Dolly Dots Mixtures Style. What's not to love? Well, loads of people actually will hate it - but the Swedes liked it enough to save it from relegation (or, if the papers are to be believed, it was lucky enough to survive the curse of the app). Either way, we're looking forward to seeing it again!

More next Saturday! For much more on yesterday's antics in Sweden, we refer you to our friends at Scandipop.
