The EUROfiasco Top 10 for 2020

As this post hits the blog, the Flag-Waving Party will just be wrapping up and we’ll be turning our collective attentions to BBC1 for the double-header of Come Together and Europe Shine A Light. No doubt already emotionally exhausted from 3.5 hours of Zoom-based Eurovision memories and merriment!

We’ll post an update from the Flag-Waving as soon as we’ve recovered from it but there is an important thing for us now to make public: the EUROfiasco Top 10 for 2020.

We sat down at the start of April - the weekend we should have been in Amsterdam, in fact, for Eurovision in Concert - and, in the usual fashion, went through each semi-final, qualified 10 songs (based on combined independent voting from each of us) and then went through the final 26 songs to pick our favourites. And here we are!

It didn’t feel like the strongest of years - although it’s not the first time we’ve said that and then ended up changing our minds. It felt like there were quite a few relatively middling ballads and, frankly, few grab-you-by-the-balls bangers. What we have missed out on this year is hearing them all repeatedly across Eurovision week - in the Euroclub, Eurocafe etc - each enthusiastically supported by groups of fans from across Europe. As, normally, there’s at least a couple of songs that we end up becoming addicted to that we hadn’t heard before!

But - we are where we are - and, to be fair, the songs below make up a pretty belting selection. Congratulations to Iceland - we may never know if you won but my god this year you had a great chance. (And if it had, we may even have been aligned with the European public for once).

Our Top 10:

  • 12 - Iceland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ
  • 10 - Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช
  • 8 - Cyprus ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡พ
  • 7 - Norway ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด
  • 6 - Sweden ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช
  • 5 - Finland ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎ
  • 4 - Israel ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ
  • 3 - Greece ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท
  • 2 - Estonia ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ช
  • 1 - Australia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

Our Outsiders were (in descending order)

  • Azerbaijan ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ  (3 pts from Mark)
  • Austria ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น  (3 pts from Carl)
  • Belarus ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡พ  (2 pts from Mark)
  • Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช  (2 pts from Carl)
  • Denmark ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ  (1 pt from Carl)

And for the record, our other finalists were Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, San Marino, Serbia & Switzerland.
(And we both liked Italy, and sort of regret not voting for it higher, but I guess it didn’t grab us at the time it needed to)
